George Cripps
A remembrance of things past
Jan 19th - March 2nd
George Cripps is a recent graduate from Goldsmith’s University and we are pleased to be hosting his first solo show at the m2 Gallery.
A remembrance of things past is an investigation of memory where windows, objects and facades become vessels of experience.
Cripps is fascinated by his ancestral stories.
A photograph, a doorway picked out, an imagined scene…
The artist pieces together bits and pieces of received information to create and reconstruct his own version of past events. This journey of discovery involves him investigating objects and materials, the haptic experience helping him to unearth information.
Concealed and revealed openings in historic buildings, doors within doorways and frames within frames; those places that act as portals into our imagination are all sources of inspiration. Through constructed frames, Cripps invites us, the viewers to engage with porosity, interiors and exteriors, space and depth, and perception of place.
Using this playful process of reconstruction he grapples with the slippery and subjective nature of memory.
Currently based in London, George Cripps graduated with a BA in Fine Art at Goldsmiths University in 2024. His practise shifts across sculpture, drawing, filmmaking and photography. He has shown and taken part in shows at Matchstick Piehouse Deptford, Avalon Café Bermondsey and Wagner Hall Brighton and has recently been shortlisted for the BADA art prize.
